Shi Lifeng

Born 1968 in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, Shi Lifeng studied at the the Hebei Normal University. Shi’s paintings display an evolution from the Socialist Realism of the 1980s to the starting points of Expressive Individualism in Chinese contemporary art. Exploring the colonialist characteristics of society, Shi focus on the groping for and excavation of the world of individual inner feeling; his attitude toward life is also gradually evolved from a collective group consciousness into a self-centered creative conception of identity.  In one sense we can proceed from external signs and totems to decode his works, yet even more important is the process of aphorizing his inner psychological world, a process to which he alludes to interpersonal interactivity through the creation of multiple identical identities.

Lifeng Shi is an internationally exhibiting Chinese artist, who has had shows in China, France, Scandinavia, The Netherlands, England and Singapore to date, including exposure at world renowned art fair Art Basel.

Lifeng’s current ‘Red Person’ series has been interpreted as a rigorous investigation into the possibilities of painting whilst exploring the powerlessness of those living on the edge of society. The struggling red figures contrast black or vivid blue backgrounds, allowing their struggle to almost bounce off the canvas as well as exist within it. The figures appear almost artificial like plastic figurines, an effect that could only be achieved through the greatest patience and dexterity on Shi’s part.

Interpretation of Peaks of Desire - Red Man Series

A group of people intertwined and climbing, in a silent space of a crowded, emotive jump; their muscles borne with lust and yearning. In a boundless universe, they are desperately searching for hope, unaware of the danger that surrounds them. They remind ignorant of their situation as they struggle upward.

The Red Man series works through a visual sensation of contrast and question: Where do they come from? Where will they go?

Though these works present an aurora of calmness and serenity, the viewers also feel an inflated sense of inner restlessness. The men and women are drawn with diverse posture to reflect the different positions and circumstances in which people struggle upward to find direction. The thick red color used to create the men and women in the paintings cause a sensory stimulation in which the red engenders an expression of deep desire while encircling the mystery behind the population.

The artist created the series in order to delineate the process and spectra of pain and happiness. Finding the inspiration in his personal life, he expresses his inner emotions and expels them through artistic expression onto his creations. The paintings motivate viewers to marginalize sectors of society and push him or her to climb upwards and excel in life.
