Gu Yeli
Yeli’s preoccupation with her native Shanghai is apparent in all her projects but perhaps mostly in her artwork. She continues to use public space as a platform to create nostalgic landscapes of Shanghai’s past. She tackles upcycling by collecting abandoned and broken stools and chairs from Shanghai’s alleys. With colorful wool she transforms the discarded into conceptual furniture pieces.
Born 1978 in Shanghai. Gu Yeli is a graduate of Donghua University with a bachelor degree in Graphic Design. She began her career working as a stylist for VJs on China’s music Channel V and the SMG Sports Channel. After television Yeli turned to films working as a costume designer on films including Adam Christian Clark’s, Goodbye Shanghai and A fallible Girl.
By reputation she is one of China's most innovative and celebrated stylists in commercials and fashion. In 2008 she won the prestigious Best Fashion Award at the 40 under 40 Asia Designer Award in Hong Kong. She continues to work as a freelance stylist on film and for international campaigns with clients including Nike, Coke and Nokia and advertising companies W+K and Ogilvy & Mather.
Her recent exhibitions include a solo public installation on Lane 96 Shaoxing Lu, Shanghai (2011), and group exhibitions at White Space Beijing (2011) and DDM Warehouse, Shanghai (2009).
