Jonas Merian
Born 1976 in Switzerland, Jonas Merian is a freelance furniture designer with a background in prosthetics and orthotics. After working as a prosthetist for 17 years in Switzerland, North Korea and China, Jonas began to concentrate on furniture design in 2009.
Based currently in Shanghai, Jonas renovated an abandon factory to become his home and studio in addition to building all his own furniture and lamps. Through his education and experience working on prosthetics he learned to work with a wide variety of materials like wood, leather, metal, resin, silicone, carbon fiber, textiles, plastics among others.
Currently his furniture focuses on recycled materials and objects. Reclaimed wood, old Chinese furniture and everyday objects that he finds in local markets, antique markets or in thrift shops become his tools and inspiration for new pieces.
His recent exhibitions include group shows at the River South Art Center, Shanghai (2011) and The Source, Shanghai (2011).
